Students in Marsha Belton’s fifth-grade class at Jefferson Elementary School wrote biographies to celebrate Black History Month while honing their skills in English Language Arts. Each student researched and wrote about an inspirational African American innovator who faced and overcame challenges.
The students went through the five steps of the writing process, including pre-writing and brainstorming, research utilizing various modalities of media, drafting using graphic organizers, revising through peer discussions, and editing and proofreading through teacher-student consultations.
Student Landon B. found inspiration in Jackie Robinson.
