At the recent Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Jonathan Raymond updated school district-wide efforts to support students and families displaced by a three-alarm fire at a Union Street co-op building last week.
The flames moved quickly throughout the six-story building, exacerbated by gusty winds in the area at the time. In total, 17 students and two school district employees were affected. The impacted students attend Trinity Elementary School, Isaac E. Young Middle School, Webster Elementary School, and New Rochelle High School.
Trinity Elementary School switched to virtual learning while crews remediated a strong smoke odor in the building, which is close to the scene of the fire.
School district staff immediately responded to students and families who were affected. Trinity Elementary School and Isaac E. Young Middle School Parent Teacher Associations are working with the schools to collect cash, gift cards, and other items to help the displaced families meet their immediate needs. Anyone who wishes to donate can do so here. The school district central office is also fundraising for affected staff.
